Become a Mentor

America Reads - Reading Mentor

Responsibilities:

  • Tutor 1st and 2nd grade students in reading following a 30 minute lesson plan
  • Record activities of each tutoring session on a daily log and weekly report
  • Participate in monthly on-site meetings with Team Leaders
  • Participate in an America Reads orientation session, a site orientation, and eight hours of Primary Training prior to the first day of tutoring
  • Participate in monthly Training and Development sessions
  • Mentor at least 6 hours per week, 2 to 3 hours per day, 2 to 5 days per week, according to a weekly work schedule
  • Abide by the attendance policy standards regarding absences and late arrivals
  • Sign up for America Reads Listserv to keep up-to-date with America Reads schedule changes and announcements

Qualifications:

  • Must be a UM student
  • Must have Federal Work-Study eligibility in order to be paid (interns and volunteers welcome!)
  • Must make a one-semester commitment to the program and attend orientation and primary training
  • Flexibility in scheduling and placement
  • Available to work a minimum of six (6) hours per week
  • Demonstrate ability and eagerness to work with children

Preferred but not mandatory:

  • Experience with and/or coursework in multilingual, multicultural settings
  • Foreign language skills
  • Regular access to a car


Reading Mentors earn $10.00 per hour the first semester and are eligible for pay increases in subsequent semesters.
